South African social security agency (SASSA) is a national agency owned by the government of South Africa that was established on the behalf of Department Of Social Developed on April 25,2025 with the aim of distributing social grants through South Africa Social Security system. The government of South Africa established this agency in light  of the Social Assistance Act of 2004 and South African Social Security Agency Act of 2004.

The reason to establish SASSA was to shift the social security assistance from provinces to the central for the provision of social security assistance with the aim to make the services better for people. the key role of South African social security agency is to administer and provide social grants to the deserving people of South Africa while preventing corruption and frauds.

SASSA Appeal

Grants are divided into following categories:

  1. Aged person’s grant
  2. Child support grant
  3. Foster child grant
  4. Grant for disabled
  5. War veteran’s grant
  6. Grant in aid
  7. Grant for care dependency

The usual processing time for SASSA appeal is 60 to 90 days. however, this duration may vary under different circumstances or number of applications received. If your application is accepted then your grant will be issued from the date you applied but in case your application is declined you will receive a letter explaining the reason why your application for grant is not accepted.

In case your sassa grant appeal is rejected then you might start a reconsideration in which you will request SASSA to review your appeal. But before applying for reconsidering it is necessary for you to review all of your personal details you provided. You can apply for reconsidering within 30 days of rejection of your application and you can avail this opportunity only once.

For reconsidering you can can apply by two methods:

If you fulfil the criteria of eligibility for SASSA grant but you missed the duration for appeal or your gant has expired then you can reapply for the grant and the process for reapplying is the same as applying for the first time. You will need to visit the SASSA SRD website and enter the same information that you entered while applying for the first time. You will be asked your ID number, name, contact details and bank account. 

After this SASSA will review your details and make a decision of accepting or declining your application.

If your reconsideration appeal is rejected and you still believe that you are eligible for SASSA grant then you have the right that you can lodge an appeal against the SASSA’s decision of declining your application within 90 days of SASSA’s decision. While appealing you will need to provide your following information:

  • Your name
  • Your contact details
  • SASSA reference number
  • Explaining the reason that why you think you are eligible but SASSA rejected your application
  • Proof to support your appeal

Your appeal must be submitted to ITSAA(independent tribunal for social assistance appeals) within 90 days then ITSAA will review your application. If ITSAA found out that you are eligible then you will start getting an amount otherwise you will be notified about your rejection/decline of your application.

When you have applied for the grant then you can track the status of your application. Through status check you can check whether your application is accepted or rejected. Once your application is accepted you will have to check the upcoming dates for grant payment through a status check. You can check the status through following ways:

In case your financial condition becomes good while your grant appeal is pending then you have the choice to cancel that appeal. On the other hand if your appeal has already been approved and now you want to cancel the grant then you will have to lodge an appeal for the cancellation of grant.

For canceling first check your status on the website. If your grant status is inactive then you don’t need to cancel on the other hand if it is active than follow the following steps for cancellation:

  1. Open SRD website on browser.
  2. Provide SRD and phone number and click on “Send Pin”.
  3. OTP will be sent to your mobile. Enter this OTP and proceed to verify.
  4. Another interface will appear on your screen. Now look for “Cancel my grant” and click on it.
  5. Now select “yes”. Your grant application will be cancelled.

In situations like your grant was canceled at your request because your employment or financial status was improved and now unfortunately your financial conditions are worsened and you need the grant again to support your basic needs of life. So if you want to reinstate the canceled grant you need to follow following steps:

  1. Visit SRD website.
  2. Provide SRD and mobile number and click on “Send”.
  3. OTP will be sent on your mobile number. Enter that OTP and tap on “verify pin”
  4. Agree to terms and conditions.
  5. Click on “Reinstate my grant”
  6. Confirm that you want to reinstate your grant by clicking on the “YES” button on the prompt of your screen.

Once your SASSA appeal grant will be approved the SASSA will start paying you the giant from the day you applied. SASSA doesn’t pay an amount to the grantees on a fixed date every month so you need to check the date for grant regularly  by visiting the official website of SASSA SRD.

When your for SASSA Appeal will be approved you will be given two choices for payment. You can either choose a bank account or cash payment.

If you choose the bank account then your payment will be deposited in your account on a designated date. And if you opt for a cash payment then you can withdraw your amount from the retail outlets like Usave,checkers and spars etc.

Sometimes your contact number or home address is changed due to any reason then you must update your new contact details on SRD application. To update contact details follow the following instruction:

  1. Open SRD website on browser
  2. Provide ID number and SASSA applicant ID number.
  3. Enter new contact details that you want to update.
  4. Proceed further and click on the “Submit” button.

Note that your contact details will be updated after 24 hours to your request for update.

In case you have entered the wrong name or made a spelling mistake while submitting your application then you have the option to update it. You can update your name according to the name as mentioned on your South African ID card. And if your name is changed due to different reasons like marriage or divorce then you need to update your name on your ID card first.

For update follow following steps:

  1. Visit SRD website on browser and scroll down.
  2. Look for the “South African ID holder” button and click on “click here to proceed”.
  3. After it, tap on “Request name and Surname update”.
  4. Enter your ID, new name and surname and tap “submit”.

After this SASSA will verify your name and surname from the database of the department of home affairs and update it accordingly. Once your details are updated you will receive a message from SASSA to inform you about the updates.

If you change your bank account then it is necessary for you to update banking details for SASSA so you may continue receiving your grant without any hurdle. The process of updating banking details is different for the citizens of south Africa and asylum seekers or special permit seeker

If you are a citizen of South Africa than follow following steps:

  1. Open SRD website on browser.
  2. Look for “click here to proceed” and tap on it. Another page will be open.
  3. Now look for “How do I change my banking details” and click on it.
  4. Enter your ID card number. Once youtube=need your ID number you will receive a link in message.
  5. Tap on this link and follow instructions accordingly and provide the details correctly that are being asked.

 If you are Asylum seeker and Special permit holder than follow following steps:

  1. Open SRD website on browser.
  2. Look for “provide payment ID to collect payment and select any one option that is convenient for you.
  3. Enter phone,file and pass[ort number that you used during registration time.
  4. Follow the instructions and complete the updating process.

It is important that the bank account you are updating be on your name otherwise it will not be accepted as according to SASSA’s rules SASSA can send money only to the bank account registered on the name of grantee itself.

Previously, it was mandatory for persons whom status for SASSA appeal was active needed to reapply for the grant after every three months for the continuation of their grant but now the SASSA has reviewed their policy and decided that the grantees will continue receiving their grants until their eligibility and the don’t need to reapply for grant after every three months.
