SASSA grant is for the people holding South African Citizens who have participated in World war or Korean war. The age requirement for this grant is 60 years. SASSA also does a means test to evaluate the financial status of the applicant. Once they confirm that your assets are not more than the maximum requirement then you will qualify for War Veteran SASSA Grant.

To qualify for a War veteran SASSA grant, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  1. Applicants must be citizens of South Africa or recognized refugees with permanent residence in South Africa.
  2. They should not be residing in any state-funded institution.
  3. Applicants should be aged 60 years or older.
  4. They must have participated in the Korean War or World War.
  5. Individuals should not be receiving any other social grant.
  6. If single, their monthly income should not exceed R96,840. If married, the combined monthly income should not exceed R193,680.
  7. Applicants must comply with the means test requirements.
  8. For singles, the total value of assets should not exceed R1,372,800. For married individuals, the combined value of their assets should not exceed R2,745,600.
SASSA Grant

SASSA means test is a technique that SASSA uses to evaluate the income, assets and other financial aspects of the applicant who had applied for a grant basis on War Veteran. Its aim is to make sure that the grant should be paid only to the deserving people. The means test consists of two thresholds.

Assets Threshold:

  • For a single person, the total worth of assets should not exceed R1,372,800.
  •  For a married person, including their spouse, the combined worth of assets should not exceed R2,745,600.

Income Threshold:

  • The annual income of a single person should not exceed R96,840.
  • The combined annual income of a married person and their spouse should not exceed R193,680.

Please note that  the means test elevation criteria is different for every application.

If a person is eligible for the war veteran grant then he will get an amount of R2 110 per month. However this amount is expected to increase in later months.

To apply for the War Veteran SASSA grant, you will need the following documents:

  • Your 13-digit ID number.
  • Your service card as proof of participation in war.
  • A medical certificate from a recognized medical officer attesting to your condition, dated within the last three months.
  • A signed sworn statement from a reputable individual in your community (such as a counselor, trader, or school minister) verifying your name and age.
  • An oath template downloaded from the SASSA SRD website, properly filled out, and signed in the presence of a SASSA verified oath commissioner.
  • An ID issued by the South Africa Department of Home Affairs.
  • Evidence of marital status, which may include a marriage certificate or divorce decree if separated from your spouse.
  • Proof of your current address.
  • If you receive a pension, you’ll need to provide a pension slip.
  • Evidence of your assets.
  • Your bank statements from the last three months, detailing your transactions.

Discharge certificate issued by your previous employer that proves that you are unemployed.

Once you have applied for the SASSA War Veteran grant it is necessary that you must keep checking the status of your application. You can check the status of the application if it is proved or declined through following ways:

SASSA usually takes three months to process your application. If your application is accepted then the applicant will start receiving the amount from the date he applied for the grant. And in case if the application for the grant is rejected then you will receive a notice/letter from SASSA that will clarify the reason for the rejection of your grant’s application.

If your application for a grant is declined and you think that the decision is incorrect, you have the option to request SASSA to review your application once more. Should this request be rejected again, and you still disagree with SASSA’s decision, you have the right to appeal to the Ministry of Social Development at the National Department of Social Development. It’s essential to initiate the appeal process within 90 days of receiving the notification.

The Ministry of Social Development will carefully review your appeal to reach a decision. If they find merit in your case, they will overturn SASSA’s decision, enabling you to resume receiving your grant payments. Conversely, if your appeal is unsuccessful, you will receive a written explanation for the decision.

SASSA GRANT

The SASSA War Veteran Grant may be temporarily declined for various reasons:

  • Residence in Government-Owned Station: If you have been residing in or admitted to a government-owned station.
  • Extended Overseas Visit: If you travelled abroad for a duration exceeding 90 days.
  • Improved Financial Situation: If your financial circumstances have significantly improved, rendering you ineligible for the grant.
  • Non-Collection of Grant: If you have failed to collect the grant for more than three consecutive months, your SASSA War Veteran Grant will be discontinued.

Once your SASSA grant will be approved the SASSA will start paying you the giant from the day you applied. SASSA doesn’t pay an amount to the grantees on a fixed date every month so you need to check the date for gant regularly  by visiting the official website of SASSA SRD.

When your application for SASSA grant will be approved you will be given two choices for payment. You can either choose a bank account or cash payment.

If you choose the bank account then your payment will be deposited in your account on a designated date. And if you opt for a cash payment then you can withdraw your amount from the retail outlets like Usave, checkers and spars etc.

There is no fee/charge for applying for the SASSA War Veteran Grant. The application for the grant is totally free.

The SASSA grant can be suspended for various reasons, including:

  • Improved Financial Situation: If your financial circumstances have improved beyond the eligibility criteria.
  • Invalid or Fake Information: If any personal details provided in your application are found to be invalid or falsified.
  • Grant Error: If the grant was approved by SASSA due to any administrative mistake or error.
  • Review Outcome: Suspension may occur as a result of a routine review of your eligibility.
  • Non-Cooperation: If you fail to cooperate during the review process of your application.

SASSA conducts periodic reviews of Veteran grant applications to assess whether there have been any changes in your financial status or if you still meet the means test criteria or not.

If your grant is suspended or discontinued and you think that you are eligible for SASSA War Veteran  grant then you own the right to appeal within 90 days of suspension of grant  for the restoration of grant.
